What are the chances of a breast cancer recurrence? and survival rate?

a close person i know has Invasive ductal carcinoma in situ with minimal/ inconclusive shes her2+ tumor is 1.5 cm. She's getting a second opinion from somwhere before she begins lumptectomy and radiation followed by chemotherapy. I would like to know how long can she live upto and the chances of a recurrence.

There are lots of statistics out there, but I hate to try and go by that because everyone is different. There are so many factors that go into each case. I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma last year. On the mammogram it appeared to be 1.5 cm, but by the time I had the tumor removed it was 2.5 cm. I am also her2+ and Er/Pr+. I chose to have a mastectomy, and I had node involvement so I also had chemotherapy and radiation. Because I was Her2/neu+ I had a year of Herceptin treatments. My last treatment is in two weeks. Herceptin was approved not that long ago to use in treatment for eary stage Her/2neu+ breast cancer. I would assume your friend will be having that part of her treatments. There are many treatments available to us and there are many many survivors. I'm glad to hear she's getting a second opinion, I think that's so important. I wish your friend the best.

Ovarian Cancer Research Fund

The Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF) is a charity Daily Grommet would like to help. Dedicated to identifying and sponsoring talented researchers who want to find a method of early detection, and ultimately a cure, for ovarian cancer. Ovarian cancer is actually the deadliest gynecologic cancer, and the fifth leading cause of cancer death among women in this country. Unlike cervical cancer and breast cancer (screened by regular Pap smears and mammograms) ovarian cancer has no effective screening test. Since 1998, OCRF has awarded over $23 million grants to 128 of the brightest women and men in the field at 40 leading medical centers across the country. Daily Grommet has chosen to help this charity in the hope that we can make a difference for all women, http://www.dailygrommet.com

Can anyone tell me anything about pagets disease?

The one related to breast cancer. I keep finding stuff on osteoporosis. I am 26, I don't have to worry about osteoporosis, yet…. I don't think. Anyway, any help you can provide would be tremendous. I need to know if it highly dangerous, treatment, survival rate etc….

The National Cancer Society:
http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Sites-Types/pagets-breast

They talk about everything you asked other than the survival rate and also have some clinical research trials that are available which are great for cancer patients.

National Research Center for Women and Children:
http://www.center4research.org/pagets.html

This article talks about the disease in an over-view format and has information concerning an email that was sent out about this being a new form of breast cancer.

Web MD:
http://www.webmd.com/breast-cancer/pagets-nipple-disease

Basically the same information as the National Cancer society.

If you have been diagnosed with this I wish you all the best in the world. Cancer is scary to say the least. I have lost my father, aunt and numerous other family members to the disease, but have also known women who survived breast cancer completely. You are about my age, I am 27, and yes we do have to start thinking about our bone health. Studies show that after 30 it is hard for a woman to build additional bone density and it is especially important to try to increase your bodies calcium before becoming pregnant. So drink your milk, eat the dairy and take a supplement. If you have been diagnosed with cancer and would like to email me I would answer any question I can from the perspective of someone who has dealt with the disease in the family.

Happy Holidays!!

5 year survival rate = 82% for my wifes stage of breast cancer that she has why does it say?

that when she survives 7 years the survival rate drops. ” After seven years, the survival rate decreases for each stage. ”

Here is the link: http://www.imaginis.com/breasthealth/staging3.asp

I do not understand this because after 7 years of not having cancer should’nt it be a “normal-life span” after being cancer free?

No, because breast cancer can still recur at 7, 10, 15, even 20 years after the intitial treatment - basically any time. It may remain "dormant" for many years and then start growing again at distant sites where it has been sitting quietly microscopically all along.

I know this seems strange. Still, most that will come back do so in the first 5 years.
A smaller percentage come back after that, but of course these odd cases of late recurrence are added on to the early recurrences which makes the overall survival lower at 7 or 10 or later years.

Statistics can drive you crazy. It's usually best not to get too wound up trying to figure them out. Once you have done all you can do, it doesn't make much sense to add worry and stress over the unknowable.

Statistics never tell you what you really want to know. We never know when to declare someone "cured" of breast cancer. Even if we lose someone 20 years after breast cancer treatment from something else - a car accident or whatever - we don't know for certain whether the person was actually harboring a few dormant bits of the original breast cancer.

Many men with prostate cancer die from some other cause and may be found to have also had residual prostate cancer if an autopsy is done. Hormonally responsive malignancies are even more unpredictable than other types - - though I tell audiences when I give lectures that all of the different cancer types follow no set rules. They are by definition aberrant, uncontrolled cellular growth.

I suppose it is a success for the oncologist to control a cancer until a person lives out a normal life span. Internists never really cure high blood pressure - we just try to control it. We try to stave off death from every disease threat as long as possible.

Which kind of common cancer has the best survival rate?

Other than basal cell skin cancer, what kind of common cancer has the best five year survival rate? Obviously no cancer is good, but who has better odds of survival, say someone diagnosed with early stage breast cancer or someone with early stage Hodgkin lymphoma? How about early stage melanoma or colon cancer? What percentage of people with say Hodgkin lymphoma die as opposed to percentage with say breast cancer or colon cancer or kidney cancer? I’m asking for a friend who is tired of being told Hodgkin lymphoma is “a good cancer to get.” He thinks it’s really insulting.

I don't know about the comment being insulting, but I'd think the person who said ANY kind of cancer is a good kind to get is a moron who has never been diagnosed with cancer.

Just sayin.

One-Minute Cure-Video.wmvMORE DRUGS or One-Minute Therapy? A REAL Cancer Cure or Just Another SCAM???

http://www.TheOneMinuteCureAll.com Learn how a simple formula has been scientifically proven to cure cancer and virtually all diseases. Why this one-minute therapy is being suppressed in the U.S. while more than 15,000 European doctors have been using it to heal millions of patients.

What if you lived in a world where cancer — or any other disease — was no longer a threat to you? What if you never had to experience the horror of receiving a doctor’s chilling diagnosis of a terrible disease — or watch helplessly as someone you care about suffers from cancer or some other life-threatening disease — with you not being able to do anything about it?

What would you be willing to give to ensure that you and your loved ones would never need to suffer — or die — from so-called “incurable” diseases that are actually curable?

If you’re like most people, chances are, you or someone you know suffers from one or more of the following diseases:

Cancer, AIDS, Heart Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Asthma, Diabetes, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Alcoholism, Hepatitis, Herpes, Emphysema, Periodontal Disease
